This year’s theme, “Substance Use Disorders and Suicide: Unraveling the Underpinnings of Traumatic Experiences,” underscores the critical need to explore the intersection of trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and their long-term effects on mental health and well-being. By focusing on the connections among traumatic experiences and two of most pressing mental/behavioral health challenges—substance use disorders and suicide—the symposium seeks to foster a deeper understanding and inspire innovative strategies for prevention and intervention.

About the event

This year’s symposium will highlight the often-overlooked role of trauma in shaping behaviors and mental health outcomes. Traumatic experiences, especially during critical developmental periods, can alter neurological pathways, disrupt emotional regulation, and contribute to feelings of despair, isolation, and substance dependency. By unraveling the layers of trauma that underpin these conditions, we can better identify risk factors, support resilience-building efforts, and design trauma-informed approaches that address root causes rather than symptoms. The symposium welcomes experts, advocates, and community members to explore cutting-edge research, share lived experiences, and collaborate on solutions that prioritize healing and recovery.

Moreover, the symposium will serve as an opportunity to challenge societal stigmas surrounding substance use and suicide by reframing these issues through the lens of trauma. Recognizing that these struggles often stem from unresolved pain rather than personal failure fosters empathy and underscores the importance of compassionate, holistic care. Attendees can expect to engage in meaningful dialogue and be inspired to take action to bridge gaps in understanding, enhance support systems, and create pathways toward hope and healing for individuals and families affected by trauma.

Together, we can champion a future where resilience replaces despair, and healing is accessible to all.
